Pole to Pole | The Photographs

In July 1991 Basil joined Michael Palin and his crew in Tromso, Norway, to begin filming the journey from the North to the South Pole along the 30-degree-East line of longitude (the North Pole to Tromso journey was filmed separately in May 1992 due to ice conditions). Over the following five months Basil and Michael travelled by land and water through Finland, the USSR, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe to Cape Town in South Africa, where they were informed their arranged passage aboard the MV S.A. Agulhas to Antarctica had been cancelled. With no other options, the crew flew to Antarctica and the South Pole via Chile. This is a collection of some of Basil's best images from the journey, with new chapter introductions by Michael.
